Moors, Art, Pretend it's a City..

Posted by Julia Ogden on

This week I have been working on a commission and a smaller landscape as well as trying to finish a Whitby painting. The commission and smaller painting are both inspired by the moors. I was thinking about what draws me to these places; the open spaces, the moody skies and the warm colours of plants and heather. It isn't a chocolate box landscape, it is something wilder. There is a freedom in painting them. Whilst I have been painting I have been watching "Pretend it's a City" (yes, I paint mainly with music but sometimes with the telly on, maybe...

Stories and painting

Posted by Julia Ogden on

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you will know I ran a little competition to name my new Stoodley Pike painting. I received so many lovely suggestions that I couldn't really choose. So I asked the family that bought the painting to do so; it felt the perfect solution. They decided on "This is what it is to be happy" which I love and suited the painting really well. It is a Sylvia Plath quote and it made me think about the connection between words and pictures. With my background in illustration, stories are so important to me....

Stoodley Pike Painting

Posted by Julia Ogden on

This week I finished my painting of Stoodley Pike. It began life in one of my classes, where I was teaching landscape painting. The photograph kindly supplied by my student! I loved the mist in the photograph and the foliage framing it. I carried on in spots and spurts, layering colours, looking for shadows in the mist. It took a while to get the pink fresh looking while still blended with the blue! I have a competition to win a print of my painting on my Instagram and Facebook pages. All you need to do is suggest a title and...

So along with people who have bought summer seating, spring clothes and barbecues, I have probably contributed to the snow this week as I decided at the beginning I would write a blog about my Spring paintings.. About this time last year when lockdown was all weird and new, the sun came out. I remember delivering local orders; walking paths I had never trodden with my phone in hand, optimistically following arrows. The woods were full of blue..  At the same time I was commissioned to paint some bluebell woods. It was such a lovely painting to do for the...

Interior Design Masters

Posted by Julia Ogden on

I never knew when I painted this; that it would take on a life of its own. Last year I got a call from an interior designer explaining that she was currently filming Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr and would like to use one of my paintings in her design scheme. It was for a restaurant in my hometown; Chapter 17. I was flattered to be asked and Lynsey (Lynsey Ford Designs) was really lovely to work with. The process and end result can be seen on this episode. It is such a beautiful space and I can't wait to go and...
